After graduating, many alumni go to University, become priests or sisters, or pursue a career that allows them to build, grow, and lead their local communities.

Academics

Developing Leaders

Critical thinking is at the forefront of learning.  It enables a student to determine how to make sense of the world using personal observation and understanding. It also helps young women and men become civic leaders in support of building a community of collaboration and service.  That is why Hope for Uganda focuses on supporting the education of students at both AFSS & SHS.

Creating Opportunity

For more than 2 decades, Northern Uganda has been a war-torn area as a result of the LRA rebel forces. The rebuilding efforts by HFU started in 2017 when 261 acres of highly fertile farmland were purchased. Today, the farm is now the central hub of commerce and uses the most modern farming techniques available. All students, faculty & staff from the schools can be fed from its production.

Nourishing Souls

Christian teachings begin by learning to live a life set forth in the image and likeness of God. Those same teachings provide direction to the young women and men at AFSS and SHS who are developing their own image and likeness during these formative years.

Caring for Others

The people of Northern Uganda live very simply. Their homes consist of round huts made of clay, a thatched roof and dirt floor. They walk many miles every day for basic human needs such as water, food and healthcare. The David Fagerlee Medical Center was built to provide a clean and sanitary location for mothers giving birth as well as other medical needs for the local community.

About

Northern Uganda & HFU

The genesis of Hope for Uganda (HFU) shows how God's Divine Will can make the impossible come to life.

In 1990, the Bishop of Gulu sent a newly ordained priest named Father Matthew Odong on a mission to Minnesota. His story captured the hearts of Dan and Bobbi Vaughan. Captivated by this Ugandan priest’s passion and intelligence, they invited him into their home for a meal.  They listened to this young man tell the story of his homeland and the poor living conditions of the people in this war-torn country. Father Matthew discussed how he was tasked to re-open a seminary school despite continued violence inflicted by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). The war created displacement camps and poverty throughout Northern Uganda. In spite of these horrific circumstances, he never relinquished his dream to bring hope back to the people through faith and education.
