Hope for Uganda
The genesis of Hope For Uganda (HFU) proves how the Divine Will of God, through his humble servants can accomplish what seems impossible.
HFU Introduction to the United States
In 1990, the Bishop of Gulu sent a 30-year-old priest named Fr. Matthew Odong on a mission to Minnesota. Little did he know his story would capture the hearts of a devout couple named Dan and Bobbi Vaughan. His charisma and intelligence drew them closer to his cause, so much so, that they invited him into their home for a meal with ice cream for dessert. They listened compassionately to the story of his terribly war-torn homeland and its people.
A Dream to Bring Hope
Following Fr. Matthew's visit to the United State, he was appointed Rector of Sacred Heart Seminary (SHS), a minor seminary in Gulu. His mission was to re-open the school despite continued violence by rebels in the area. During these horrific times, he found it very difficult to raise money to keep the seminary operating. His dream and passion, even then, was to bring hope to his people through faith and education.
In 1996, Pete and Dottie Truax joined forces to form a non-profit called The Adunu Maleng Pa Yesu Society. The purpose was to raise awareness in the United States of the war between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan Government. They traveled extensively throughout the U.S. meeting with government and Church officials as well as advocacy groups.
Educating the Next Generation
When the war ended in 2006, most of the secondary schools in Northern Uganda were destroyed. While SHS secondary school survived, the need to rebuild another secondary school was paramount for this area.
In 2009, Archbishop Flynn Secondary School (AFSS) opened its doors for boys and girls in Pader District. Today, both schools are thriving.
AFSS provides a high-quality education, room, and board for more than 700 boys and girls in a safe, nurturing, and faith-filled environment. SHS, a minor seminary and secondary school, provides a high-quality education, and room and board for more than 200 young men who discern the priesthood.
Quality Healthcare in Rural Uganda
In 2016, The David Fagerlee Medical Clinic (DMFC) opened its doors giving hope to its patients needing quality healthcare and support beyond simple survival. The clinic serves as a wonderful example of how education can create tremendous job opportunities as well as quality healthcare for all.
Sustainability for the Future
In 2017, 261 acres of land were purchased, and throughout the subsequent years, generous benefactors have donated critical farm equipment and supplies to the area. To date, there have been several successful harvests that help feed students and provide income for the schools. Additionally, HFU has supported the need for 40 boreholes to create clean water in the area.
What began as a simple act of courage and love has grown in strength and conviction. By joining forces with Hope For Uganda (HFU), you too will be touched by the love of its people.
